This Before Coffee
Are you dehydrated? You might be and not even realize it.
Staying hydrated is important. Even being slightly dehydrated can impact our mood, memory, and concentration.
Yet, many of us walk around all day with water bottles thinking that if we are drinking water, we’re good. You might not be though. Drinking plenty of water doesn’t equate to better hydration. If we don’t have the proper electrolytes, much of the water we drink never gets into our cells where we need it the most.
So, why do we need electrolytes? Electrolytes (sodium, potassium, and magnesium) aid in fluid transportation and muscle and brain function. Basically, electrolytes help move water in and out of our cells.
I am not advocating drinking one of the many “electrolyte” drinks in the market. Many of those are filled with so many chemicals….that’s a whole other conversation. 😊Actually, we can get electrolytes in a more natural way.
Adding these three minerals to your diet naturally can help.
Sodium – Pink Himalayan salt
Potassium – Bananas, avocados, sweet potatoes
Magnesium – Almonds, pumpkin seeds, leafy greens
My favorite morning hydration hack:
Instead of grabbing a cup of coffee first thing in the morning, start with electrolyte rich water. Sleep is the longest period you go without water (7-8 hours), so you wake up naturally dehydrated. “Break the fast” with 500 ml of lukewarm water, a ¼ teaspoon Himalaya, and a tablespoon of lemon juice. Then, have your coffee.
